Why the Margallahs Matter

The Margallah Hills form an important natural landscape adjoining Islamabad. They provide forested habitats, natural drainage, recreational opportunities and a distinctive environmental setting for the city.

Protecting this landscape means recognising the connections between forests, wildlife, water, soil, vegetation and the communities that use and value the hills.

A Landscape, Not Just a Forest

Conservation must consider the Margallahs as an interconnected landscape. Changes to vegetation, watercourses, habitats and patterns of human activity can affect the wider ecological system.

The Society supports an approach that values the integrity of the hills and encourages informed stewardship rather than isolated or short-term interventions.

Conservation Through Stewardship

Long-term conservation depends on awareness, responsible management and continued attention to environmental conditions. It also depends on cooperation among residents, visitors, institutions, conservation organisations and public authorities.

The Margallah Hills Society seeks to contribute to that stewardship through information, community engagement and support for responsible conservation practices.

Responsible Enjoyment of the Hills

The hills are enjoyed by residents and visitors for recreation, exercise, nature observation and exploration. Enjoyment of the Margallahs should go hand in hand with respect for their natural environment.

Visitors can help by avoiding litter, respecting vegetation and wildlife, remaining on appropriate trails, and leaving natural areas undisturbed.

Conservation Is a Shared Responsibility

No single organisation can conserve the Margallah Hills on its own. Effective stewardship requires informed citizens and constructive cooperation among the many people and institutions connected to the landscape.

The Society welcomes responsible participation and dialogue aimed at protecting the Margallahs for present and future generations.

Help Protect the Margallahs

Learn about the hills, enjoy them responsibly and support efforts that contribute to their long-term conservation. Every responsible action helps strengthen the shared stewardship of this important natural heritage.
